NCMA

The North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh is a gorgeous building housing an impressive collection of art. What I'm most drawn to however, is the architecture of the West Building, which was completed in 2010 and designed by Thomas Phifer and Partners. Many of the galleries flanking the perimeter of the building are flooded with filtered light from large floor to ceiling windows covered in soft white drapery, giving the space an ethereal feel, especially in the morning in an empty museum.

Museums are of course among the most beautiful forms of institutional architecture and it always a pleasure as a photographer to photograph these often boundary pushing designs.

The gallery ceiling is a series of oblong oculi (I guess that's a word?) allowing soft light into the interior galleries.

The exterior is a mix of metal baffles, arched rooflines and glass flanked by native grasses and reflecting pools.
